What We Do

Gardenia Medical Care is a hybrid telehealth and in-office concierge medical practice founded by Yasmilka Sarmiento, a bilingual Spanish-speaking Physician Associate (PA). For the past 10 years Sarmiento has given her time and services to remote areas in the United States populated mainly by spanish speaking, uninsured patients. During this time she saw the need of these communities to be educated on the medical conditions that heavily affects them, the need to have a medical provider who spoke their language and who understood their financial struggles.

Gardenia Medical Care was born and with it a mission to educate patients through community-inspired workshops and health screening fairs. To guide them and provide urgent medical care when needed, but ultimately, to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and take control of their health.

Our Mission & Vision

Our mission is to educate through community-inspired workshops and health screening fairs. Gardenia Medical Care will guide them and provide urgent medical care when needed, but ultimately, we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and take control of their health.

Our vision is to reduce language and financial barriers to healthcare while increasing access in remote areas of the United States, particularly where there are few or no bilingual, Spanish-speaking medical providers. This includes not just Georgia but also surrounding states such as Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, North and South Carolina. By doing so, we aim to move away from healthcare disparities and work towards true healthcare equity.

Meet the Provider

Sarmiento was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and migrated to the United states at the age of 6. She grew up in the Bronx then later moved to New Jersey to complete her undergraduate studies at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a major in Biology/pre-medicine studies. Upon graduating college and before starting Graduate school she worked with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Anxiety and Mood Disorder Program performing clinical studies with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). She went on to fulfill her graduate studies and obtained a Masters in medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). During graduate school Sarmiento participated in a Community Outreach Program where she was given the task to identify a problem in an underserved community and find a solution. An experience which marked her medical career and helped her form what is Gardenia Medical Care today.

Coming from parents who did not go to college, who worked in a factory to give their kids a better life, Sarmiento encountered many obstacles in her path of becoming a Physician Associate (PA). The Journey was not easy, not having the guidance she needed, caused deadlines to be missed and application process to be long. However, she never gave up. This “disadvantage” inspired her to co-found MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students) during her junior year in college. The organization gathered the necessary information needed for veterinary, medical and dental school and made it readily available to the first generation students who, like herself, did not have any guidance.

With over 12 years of medical experience, Sarmiento has worked in primary care (Internal and Family Medicine) for 7 years, in Rheumatology for 5 years, and currently works as an independent contractor at one of Northside’s Urgent Care. Education and leadership are important components of Sarmiento’s career. Of the many years practicing as a PA she has spent the past 8 years mentoring Pre-PA students. Some of those mentees are now practicing PAs and others are currently in PA school. In addition, she has become a clinical preceptor at a few of Georgia’s PA Programs. By being a member of the Georgia PA Association diversity committee she hopes to educate about the profession and help more students consider a career as a Physician Associate. Sarmiento is currently a member of the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), the Physician Associate for Latino Health (PALH), the Georgia Association of Physician Associates (GAPA), the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and the South East Regional Urgent Care Association (SERUCA).

After more than 5 years in the making, in 2024 Sarmiento founded Gardenia Medical Care to help the uninsured, Spanish speaking patients in remote areas of the United States. Starting with Georgia and Alabama, her goal is to expand these services to the southeast regions of the United States. What started as a community service project to educate the Spanish speaking population has become a lifelong commitment to increase medical access.
